One thing that comes into my mind when Visiting Teaching is being talked about is love and service. It is not a calling wherein sisters are being called and sustained by the priesthood authority. Anyone or any sister with a desire to serve can be or will be given a chance to perform such duty. However, this is not just an assignment that we accept and do when we find time to act upon it. It requires sacrifice and pure love.Sacrifice of time, effort, and even of self . I believe that women are blessed with the innate capacity to love and to serve.
During the October,2007 General Conference, a quote which I love and always carry in my heart says that "Service is given when needed, not when convenient." I think it is important that we are sensitive to our sisters' needs. Of course, the role of the Holy Ghost, to prompt us: "Charitable acts are often prompted by the Holy Ghost." And so through this kind of spiritual experience an increase measure of love will naturally grow in our hearts and our ability to respond to the still,small voice will be strengthened. It becomes natural for us to serve, we gain wisdom-learning when to provide and when to freely act, we win friendship and love, we gain the confidence and trust of our Savior in us.
As we act on our duty, taking one step at a time, we will comprehend the true purpose of this program.We gain insight of what truly matters in life, we feel impression and even inspiration from God about things pretaining to it.It becomes less of a program but more of a natural interaction with our sisters and people around us, we learn and gain strength from each other's experience and testimony and help accomplish God's purpose in building up His kingdom here on earth, as Nephi once said and testified, "...that the Lord will provide a way so that His work might be accomplished."
As we continue to do this, it becomes a way of life; we smile, we share, we visit, we teach, we help in a more sincere way. It all starts with a simple smile then a desire to make other people happy through words and deeds.
